Bears Quarterback Situation a Strength (Post Pre-Season Game 1 Analysis)

When I Look at the 2007 Version of the Chicago Bears and they appear to make a great team even better, and the one thing I notice is the QB Position is looking strong.

After watching the Bears first preseason game against the Houston Texans I have to say the performance of the Quarterbacks on the roster was something I haven’t witnessed in a Bears team for some time. The trio of quarterbacks went a combined 30 of 42 for 273 2 Td’s and one Int.

I Know, I know, you say what about the 1 Interception, let me take you back to the first preseasongame of 2006. Last preseason Rex Grossman was 3 for 11 for 47 yards in his first contest.

Griese on the other hand was solid 6 for 7 134 yards and a score With Rex Grossman completing his first 8 passes and ending 8 for10 for 50 yards and no int’s, Griese threw one Pick and then went on to complete 6 of 6 passes ending 6 of 7 for 72 yards 1 TD and 1 INT. Kyle Orton looked sharp going 16 for 23 for 151 yards and a TD, he also had 12 straight completions at one point.

I know again you say but it is just PRESEASON….that is my point the quarterbacks should do well against vanilla packages they face in the preseason but last year they looked lost, save Griese, the 9-year veteran, going versus second-teamers - it was easy for him. Fast forward to 2007 and you see what you would expect to see; solid play from all three quarterbacks.

The quarterback position should be a strength for the first time this decade since it was normally solid under Jim Miller and Shane Matthews in 2001. With Orton’s 10-5 record as a starter, Griese’s 39-33 record as a starter, and Rex Grossman with a record of 15-4 the starters have a combined career record of 54 and 42. I truly believe we can happily say goodbye to the years when signal callers like Kordell Stewart, Cade McNown, Moses Moreno, Henry Burris, Chad Hutchinson (just to name a few) were under center, and let us not forget the Jonathon Quinn experiment under John Shoop! I believe we can also begin to diminish the talk of the how many Bears’ QB’s there have been since Brett Favre has started in Green Bay(20).

I look at this team this year at the quarterback position and say are these the Chicago Bears? I really think this team is as deep at quarterback as any position on the team(and this team is deep all over). And the depth will be a key for them to buck the trend of Super Bowl runner ups in past history, and to make a return trip back there again, having a chance to this time, hoist the Lombardi Trophy.

I fully expect Rex to give Sid Luckman and Jim McMahon some company atop the Bears QB list and in the record books, re-writing history possibly this season in 2007.

Despite last night’s performance, I’m not gonna give up on Rex. I still think that Grossman should be the starting QB for the Chicago Bears. I’m not gonna be down on him after one shaky preseason game.
