From Street Clothes To Uniform: Tommie Harris Switchs Gear, Bears DL Anchor Returning

He will be switching apparel and exchanging the everyday kicks, jeans, and a t-shirt, for the Navy Blue Bears Uni’s, with the spikes, pads, and helmet for the Monsters of the Midway. Harris, the former 14th overall pick in the 2004 draft out of Oklahoma, will gear up for the first time since last year against Minnesota. After sitting out the Bears’ first three preseason games, the All-World DT Tommie Harris is expected to make his 2007 debut Thursday night against the Cleveland Browns at Soldier Field. Oh, will it be a joy to watch him line upwith his teammates on that intimidating, powerful, and talented defensive line, which may be considered the best in the NFL. He will surely put away and close out all/any concerns, criticism, or worries when he steps onto the field in the three-point stance, next to former teammate Dusty Dvorachek (OU) and new Bear Darwin Walker on the d-line, at Soldier Field vs. Cleveland. Harris will receive a standing ovation because every Bear fan knows he might be the most important defender in the Windy City, making the job a lot easier defensive coordinator Bob Babich (run defense) and Head Coach Lovie Smith (answering the press).

The two-time All-Pro has been practicing since the start of training camp, but he’s been held out of game action after undergoing surgery last December to repair a torn hamstring tendon.

“Tommie Harris should play,” coach Lovie Smith said following practice Tuesday at Halas Hall. “He’s ready to go.”

Smith indicated that starters likely would play “a quarter at the most” in Thursday’s preseason finale. Currently the only NFL team without a preseason loss, the Bears can finish the preseason undefeated for the first time since they went 4-0 in 1995.

Cornerback Charles Tillman, defensive lineman Israel Idonije and rookie safety Kevin Payne missed Tuesday’s practice with injuries and might not play Thursday night. Everyone else on the Bears roster is expected to be in uniform against the Browns.
