Bears catch a break: Olsen’s injury nothing major

A Sigh of Relief for now: Rookie TE Greg Olsen (Miami) sat out practice Monday with a sprained left knee he injured in Thursday night’s preseason finale against Cleveland. But the Bears’ first-round draft choice realizes that he’s fortunate enough the injury wasn’t more serious.

Olsen came out from the Bears locker room Monday with a minor limp but no special equipment to help support his left knee.

That’s progress, taking into consideration the way he looked after leaving Thursday’s game.

Olsen sounded optimistic, saying he won’t be out for a long, period of time. He was held out of Monday’s practice and wouldn’t talk about his status for Sunday’s season opener at San Diego.

“Everything is good, it’s just going to take a little time to get it back to full strength,” Olsen said. “But it’s nothing too serious. It’s just a matter of rehabbing it.”  Olsen had an MRI on his knee Friday.

“Basically, any time you do anything to the ligaments, technically it’s a sprain,” Olsen said. “You’ve got to let the inflammation go down and try to get back [the] range of motion. But as far as the ligaments and the cartilage, everything was fine.”

Olsen said the swelling continues to appear. He couldn’t pinpoint which ligament was damaged.

“All I care about is that everything was intact, that we didn’t have any structural damage,” he said. “We’re going to see how things ago, and kind of take it from there.”

“It was unfortunate that it had to happen,” Olsen said. “We’re just thankful it wasn’t anything real serious that would have taken a large amount of time out of the season.”

The Bears have not yet given a timetable/date for Olsen’s return and have not yet decided (or have they) whether he will miss Sunday’s regular season opener against the Lightning Bolts formerly known as the San Diego (choke – in the playoffs at home) Chargers.

“We’re just rehabbing it the best we can and just taking it day-by-day,” Olsen said.

  1. This is good news. Olsen looks like a nice offensive addition.

What, if any, impact do you see Garrett Wolfe having on the Bears this year? In limited time I like the quickness & speed he brings to the team but they seem to be enamored with Adrian Peterson.
