GM Angelo Speaks Out on Bears Struggles

With the Bears still trying to figure out what has gone wrong in their first 8 weeks of the season, GM Jerry Angelo is speaking out on the team, which has compiled just a mark of 3-5 at their bye week.  One player that clearly has not lived up to the billing is running back Cedric Benson, who has taken a beating by Chicago papers as well as those in the eletronic media.  Angelo, who had a big hand in getting Benson, defended his former number one pick.  ‘Cedric is performing to the best of his abilities,’ Angelo said. ‘He’s giving us top effort. That’s all I could ask of any player.’

As far as the certain level of letdown that he and the team is feeling after being in the Super Bowl a season ago and this year being just 3-5, Angelo says it goes with the business.  “You know, nothing surprises me. I know this through experience: … [Each season] your team takes on its own identity. You don’t look at what you did last year and say, ‘Well, we’re going to pick up where we left off.’ … That’s not the case. It’s an intangible. It’s a unique dynamic in sports, particularly in football because it’s such a team sport given the number of players. Did we expect this? Certainly not. But we’re here. And we still have hope, and that’s what we’re going to play on.”

The Bears will continue to have a few days to clear their heads and get some rest.  They get back to work next week when they start to prep for the Oakland Raiders on the road in the black hole on Sunday, September 11th.
