Briggs Signs Six-Year Deal To Stay With Bears

Briggs
Surprise, surprise, a free agent has hit the market and then has decided to stay with his original team. Yes, it’s about to happen in Chicago, where reports are coming in that linebacker Lance Briggs is going to stay with the Bears, coming to terms on a six-year deal worth a reported $36 mil. Brad Briggs of the Chicago Sun-Times broke the story, and now various sources are picking up on it.

Briggs just last season threw out the quote “I’ll never play another down for Chicago again.” Ahh, what a long-term deal and an awful lot of money can do to change a players mind. The other issue with Briggs was the overall concern of what he was going to find on the open market. One team that was looking long and hard at Briggs was the 49’ers, but then reports came out that they tampered with Briggs last season, and they had to back off, leaving him with not a lot of serious suitors.

The linebacker was the Bears third round pick back in 2003, and in five seasons had played in all but two games, both this season when he was nursing an injury. In five years with Chicago, Briggs had 548 total tackles, 5.5 sacks ad six picks, three of which he took back for TD’s. In a defense that did not live up to the hype in 2007, getting Briggs back is a welcome sight for Bears fans.
