2008 Bears Draft Headlines, Notes & Observations
Posted by Eric Cook on April 27th, 2008 filed in Bear Insight, Cook's Corner, Draft, OpinionsImpressed: Well since I was making such a “big deal” about drafting OL early & often, and making such a push for Chris Williams, I guess I have to say the “big ugly” from Vandy is my favorite choice. Although Matt Forte was a solid pick as well. I guess I was a little surprised that we didn’t try to grab Brian Brohm or Chad Henne but I can’t say that I am terribly dissappointed. This wasn’t a particularly deep draft for quarterbacks. I also like the Kirk Barton (OT) pick late in the draft, and the fact that we took three offensive linemen overall, albeit the last two in round 7, I think overall we drafted need in this draft with the best available a at the most important positions. A strategy that can work if you come in as slim at some positions as the Bears did.
Potential Robbery/Theft Alert: The Marcus Harrison (DT Arkansas) pick was a steal if he turns out to not be a discipline problem or injury prone. Some scouts said he had first round talent, but his injury history and conduct/character were an issue.
Day 2 Standouts: Earl Bennett will surely add depth a position that is in a rebuilding stage for the bears. And I also like Craig Steltz (safety LSU), this is in an area where the Bears need depth. Steltz should add depth and solidify a position that definitely hurt the Bears continuity on defense last year. I am not yet ready to say the Draft was an outright success but I am more than happy with what we were able to accomplish with our selections this Draft weekend.

You guys just drafted a fantastic receiver. For 3 years Bennett has reminded knowledgeable people of Jerry Rice, i.e., he has game speed that no combine test can reveal. Congrats.

I have to agree, the more video and the more I learn about this kid, the more excited I get.
