Benson Arrested for Drunk Driving in Austin, Texas

Benson's mug shot

For the second month in a row, Bears starting running back Cedric Benson is in trouble with the law, this time for drunk driving in Austin, Texas.  Benson was charged overnight, this after being pulled over in downtown Austin.  He refused blood alcohol and breathalyzer tests, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

It was just back on May 3rd that Benson was in other legal trouble, this time for failing a field sobriety test after being stopped on Lake Travis outside Austin, for a random safety check.  He also refused to cooperate, and according to the Lower Colorado River Authority, he presented himself as a threat to the officer. He was subdued with pepper spray and arrested.

Benson had said from the word go that the issue on the boat was not how it seemed, and that the truth would come out in the end.  The Bears seemed okay with that situation, but now with this, who knows exactly what will be their reaction.  This isn’t the first few run-ins with the law for Benson, who was sentenced to eight days in jail in 2003 for a misdemeanor trespassing charge after forcing his way into an apartment to look for a reported stolen TV. In 2002, misdemeanor drug and alcohol charges against him were dropped.

Benson rushed for 674 yards, four touchdowns and 3.4 yards a carry before going on injured reserve with a broken ankle in November.  In three years with the Bears, Benson has rushed for 1,593 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 3.8 yards a carry.

  1. Scott says:

Remember how he struggled to assure teams he was no Ricky Williams? Don’t we wish he was Ricky Williams? Not only did Ricky run for over 1000 yards in 5 of his first 6 years, but I’d sure rather have an introspective weed smoker for a neighbor than a violent drunk like Benson. And you can tell from his post-arrest comments that Benson has absolutely no recognition that he has a problem (other than his pathetic attempt to suggest the police were abusing him). Good god, Jerry Angelo, admit you missed the mark with that 4th pick in the 2005 draft, dump him and move on. Can you guys believe they gave away Thomas Jones to get more snaps for Benson? Here’s Thomas Jones’ career highlights from the Jet’s website:

? Rushed for more than 1,000 yards in last three seasons, including 1,119 rushing yards (10th in the NFL) in 2007, his first with Jets.

    ? Ranks 59th on NFL’s all-time rushing list with 6,503 yards.

? Owns 20 career 100-yard rushing games in regular season plus two more in playoffs.

? Posted career-high 1,335 rushing yards in 2005 to join Walter Payton as only CHI players to surpass 1,300 rushing yards in season.

? Ran for back-to-back 100 yard games at Meadowlands vs. NYG and NYJ in 2006.

? In 2004 became first CHI player since Neal Anderson (1989) to lead the team in both rushing yards and receptions.
