Will the Bears Take a Look QB Jeff Garcia?
Posted by Matt Loede on February 16th, 2009 in Rumors

The Chicago Tribune is all over the Bears taking at least a look at QB Jeff Garcia, who is not going to be brought back to the Bucs in 2009. Here is the report:
Jeff Garcia told the St. Petersburg Times that it is time to move on from Tampa Bay and that he will be a free agent. So it looks like the quarterback pool just got a tad bit bigger for the Bears. Kyle Orton is expected to be the starter next season, but Garcia is worth consideration.

It would definetly put the pressure on Kyle. Jeff Garcia seems to add a spark to each team he moves to. Angelo said he was going to adress the QB position in the offseason. Brett Basanez and Kaleb Hanie are not what I consider solid back up for Kyle I like Kyle and would like to see him play with a dominent reciever on the field. Orton got hurt last year and his performance obviously suffered. Garcia would be a very competitive backup and a nice veteran additon. I could see him taking over nicely if Orton slips up or gets hurt.

He had a good year, but i believe he will be 39,and didn’t play well for the second half of the year similiar to Orton. So if anything he would be a short term option. He definately has a stronger arm, and is a proven commodity. I would rather spend money elsewhere, either Nnamdi Asomugha or Brian dawkins would be ideal.
All the free agent quarterbacks are either really old or would be considered career back-ups…i think we are stuck hoping for better play from orton from an improved receiving corps…

Caleb Hanie is probably the best back up we have had since hmmmmm….well….uhhhhh (I know he is unproven, but appears to have composure)? I think Hanie will be fine, pick up someone else in the draft, don’t waste money on someone else’s junk unless he comes for league mininum

Garcia will not come to Chicago unless he is promised to start. That won’t happen so lets put this to rest. It will be either Leftwich or C. Simms.

I don’t think it would be a good idea, Kyle was great at the start of the year, but was hampered by the ankle injury, so lets give him a chance. Besides Garcias not going to want to come in as a backup.

Our money is better spent at other positions on the field (WR,OL,DB). OK almost every other spot on the field. Ortion hasn’t proven he can do the job but he hasn’t proven he can’t. Get him a WR and shore up the O line.
