Bears to Look at Punters for Training Camp Today

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Bears today will take a long look at punters, as they will try to ink one to bring in for training camp:

The Bears will take a look at some possible backup punters for training camp today. Zac Atterberry, who was with the team last summer and was signed to the practice squad for one week during the season when Brad Maynard was hurt, will return for a workout.

Atterberry had a tryout with the Indianapolis Colts last month and was on the Washington Redskins’ roster earlier in the offseason. The Bears liked him last summer, and he averaged 41.5 yards per punt in the preseason with a net of 39.5 yards, 11th in the league. Of course, trying to unseat Maynard, a 13-year veteran, isn’t the easiest way to make a roster.

”Where I am at right now, I just need Zac in a camp,” agent Rob Sheets said. ”Whether it’s in Chicago, Indy, Washington or Tuscaloosa, I need him in an NFL camp and let the cards fall where they may.”

Joining Atterberry in the workout will be Utah’s Louie Sakoda, an All-America kicker and punter who already was with the San Diego Chargers this spring, and Sean Douglas. Douglas spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Rams last season.

The Bears have 80 players on their roster and will have to release one to make room for a punter.
