Reactions and thoughts from 1st preseason game

Let me just get this off my chest 1st…

I put no stock in preseason games, I don’t care if they win any of the games, to me they are nothing more than a showcase to check out your new and younger talent. In my lifetime the worse the Bears did in preseason, the better they do in the regular season, so ill view the 27-20 loss as a step in the right direction.

Our new toy Jay Cutler mixed some errors in with some beautiful passes. He threw the 1 interception and almost threw another but it was dropped. The pick and the near pick seemed to be due to lack of receiver experience. Jays ball to Devin Hester that was picked was a jump ball that Devin got out jumped on, not to mention he never did anything to defend against it either.

However I was very impressed with some of the completions Jay had. There was the 20yd deep hook to Hester and then he hit Desmond Clark on a 20yd seem that just gave me a tremendous premonition on how the season will go. Our 2 tight ends will have great seasons with Cutler at QB, tight ends are a quarterbacks best friend, and we have 2 of the best!

In other observations the O line looked solid as usual, and Kevin Jones looks healthy and back to the top form he once showed in Detroit, he should spell Forte nicely this season.

First team D looked improved from last year, although their missing a few starters, everyone was in their gaps and coming off the ball very well. Marinelli has definitely made his mark on the line, they looked great. They got off fast, used multiple stunts, and actually got to the Qb a little, something that we just didn’t see last season.

2 players that shined above the rest to me were Cory Graham and Trumaine Mcbride. Those guys were everywhere, Trumaine made some nice hits for a little guy and Graham had a nice sack off a corner blitz. Im hoping those guys can be the spark that lifts our secondary to the next level.

Overall where we still lack is our receiving core, whos gonna step up and be the go to guy? Our Tight ends are gonna catch every ball if someone doesn’t man up and be the top receiver. All the receivers are horrible route runners and seem to have hand problems, I hope they pull it together or find help elsewhere cause itll be a long 1st year for Jay if we don’t address it soon. To me it’s the equivalent of having a Corvette with Wal-mart tires on it, don’t invest all the picks and money into someone if you’re not gonna give him some weapons to work with.

It could be worse….we could still have Kyle Orton!

My god did he stink up the joint on Friday! Denver hes your problem now!

3 drives, 3 picks now you’ve felt our pain Broncos Fans! Ive never felt so good about a trade in my life.

  1. Bears #1 fan says:

    Here’s my take:
    1) The offensive line may have been ok, but it seemed that the pocket was a bit crowded. Enough so that Jay had to throw from back foot. Either he has to drop back further or the charge has to be kept away.
    2) The defensive line didn’t have the penetration that was expected after all the talk.
    3) The defensive backs or the scheme for the defensive backs was so lack luster that the opposing quarterbacks (1st through 3rd string) were making all their passes.
    4) The receivers were dropping passes a lot.
    5) Jay was off on his passing. Quarterback rating of 30 is not a welcome sight.

    Just my 2 cents.
