Bears Defense Takes Down the Rams in 17-9 Win

In a season where it doesn’t seem like much has gone right for the Bears or their defense, Sunday at home against the awful St.Louis Rams was just what the doctor ordered. Allowing just 233 yards of offense, the Bears flexed their defensive muscle, topping St.Louis 17-9 to move to 5-7 on the season.

“It just felt like a game early on that was going to be a blowout,” linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer said, “and then to let them linger, that was a little disappointing. But we won. That’s the only thing I can keep saying: It’s nice to win.”

More importantly, the win snaps a four-game losing streak, and at least for one day the Bears looked like the NFC contenders many felt they would be. Matt Forte had 91 rushing yards, his best output since his 121-yard effort against Detroit was back in week four. Even with that the Bears managed just 3.2 yards per carry against the league’s fifth-worst run defense.

Jay Cutler didn’t throw a pick, and was 8-for-17 for 143 yards with a 3-yard touchdown to Earl Bennett that made it 17-6 late in the third quarter. The Rams made it 17-9 in the fourth when Josh Brown booted a 50-yard field goal, but by then, the Bears had pretty much imposed their will enough to make sure they wouldn’t let the win slip away.

“Anybody in the NFL understands that you don’t really just dominate a game,” defensive tackle Tommie Harris said. “Neither one of us are over .500.”

Jamar Williams had a big game for Lance Briggs, recording career-high 18 tackles to go with a pair of pass deflections. Williams did a better job than anyone bringing down Rams workhorse Steven Jackson, who managed 112 yards on 28 carries despite missing practice all last week with back issues.
