Chudzinksi Passes the OC Eyeball Test, But is He Really Bears’ Best Choice?

Chargers Assistant Head Coach/Tight Ends Coach Rob Chudzinski reportedly interviewed for the Bears Offensive Coordinator position on Thursday. A glance at his resume and pupils (no, not his eyeballs…although he is a striking fella) are impressive…

  • Served as OC at Cleveland when Browns QB Derek Anderson made the Pro Bowl. Yep, that’s the same dude who mustered a 10.5 rating vs. the Bears this past season.
  • Witnessed the Chargers’ Antonio Gates and Phillip Rivers turn into perennial Pro Bowlers on his watch.
  • Served as the OC at “The U” during their impressive two-year run in ’01 and ’02 when they won a National Championship and played for another the following year.

He’s accomplished all this at the ripe old age of 41…probably too seasoned to be considered what league circles would call an “up and comer.” Besides Mike Martz, he’s the candidate most qualified to be calling plays for the Bears. (Although, applying that same logic should get you and me interviews at Halas Hall considering the likes of past Chicago OCs — Crowton, Shea and Shoop.)

So assuming he doesn’t pat Matriarch McCaskey on the hiney during the Halas Hall tour, he could leave Chicago with a job offer in hand. But would it be the right hire? Consider…

  • He’s not Cutler’s BFF (like one-time candidate Jeremy Bates).
  • He’s never actually called plays for a Super Bowl contender or playoff team (like Mike Martz).
  • The year after he turned Anderson into a Pro Bowler, the Browns had the 31st ranked offense.
  • Most of his offensive coaching staff is already in place – Mike Tice (O-line), Daryll Drake (WRs) and Tim Spencer (RB). So he’s going to have to win over a room full of guys that aren’t his guys.

I think the Bears could do a lot worse. Honestly, are there any other candidates out there that tickle your fancy? The QB coach of the offensively challenged Ravens (some ‘Johnson’ dude)? Paul “I’ve been around the NFL Block one too many times” Hackett? Jim Fassel, who’s most recent coaching position was in something called the United Football League?

I say lock up some “Chud” now, get him on a plane to Mobile, AL to do some scouting at the Senior Bowl next week, then have him and Cutler start the male-bonding process as soon as possible. They’ll likely need some extra time since Chudzinski spent the last couple years with Cutler’s arch enemy, Phillip Rivers.
