Cutler-Rivers to renew rivalry in 2010 (preseason)

Last year, Jay Cutler’s return to Denver was THE most anticipated preseason game in recent memory. When the ‘games that don’t matter’ roll around this summer, Jay will re-unite with another old AFC West counterpart…Philip Rivers.
The Bears will open the 2010 preseason with a visit to the Chargers. As rivals in the AFC West prior to Cutler coming to Chi-town, Rivers and Cutler engaged in some well-documented, in-game trash talk.
The blogosphere will be ablaze with speculation about will they or won’t they shake hands after the game. Considering they may get 2 series of gametime a piece, they’ll have a lot of time to practice stiffing each other on the sidelines. But that won’t be the only potential awkward moment at Qualcomm Stadium that night.
Lovie will share the same field with the defensive coordinator he canned in the aftermath of the 2006 Super Bowl season. Ron Rivera, now D-coordinator for the Chargers, will attempt to wreak havoc on Lovie buddy Mike Martz and his shiny new passing offense. It will also be a chance for another former Bear, Nathan Vasher (who signed with the Bolts last week) to prove he’s better than this
The other 3 preseason tilts aren’t as appealing, but could offer some intriguing QB battles:
  • The Raiders, who could have Donovan McNabb as their starting QB.
  • The Cardinals, who could also have Donovan McNabb as their starting QB. Otherwise it’ll be a battle of ’06 1st round draft picks in Cutler vs. Matt Leinhart.
  • The Bears will likely offer both Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme the last chance to make a lasting impression on Browns’ brass during the highly anticipated Cleveland QB competition.
Exact dates and times for the games won’t be known until later. Until then, let the Cutler-Rivers hype machine begin!
