Jerry Angelo redeems himself by bringing Chris Harris back to Chicago

“You know, Lloyd…Just when I think you couldn’t possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this…and TOTALLY redeem yourself!”
Harry Dunne to Lloyd Christmas, Dumb and Dumber
With today’s Chris Harris-for-Jamar Williams trade, Jerry Angelo took a huge step toward redeeming himself for a move he made 3 years ago when he traded Harris to the Panthers for a fifth-round draft pick.
The Bears’ safety positions (yes, both of them) have been in a state of flux since Harris’ departure – Lovie’s tried 8 starters at EACH position. His return brings some stability to our defensive backfield. The move potentially pairs Harris with the talented, but inexperienced, Major Wright to bring new blood to the defense’s last line of defense.
It also creates the kind of defensive middle – Tommie Harris, Brian Urlacher and Harris – that’s unmatched in the NFL.
With Harris and Wright in the fold, it could spell trouble for Kevin Payne, Josh Bullocks or Al Afalava. And it should finally allow Danieal Manning to focus on the position where he had the most success last season – nickelback.
For Jamar Williams, a talented back-up who never had the chance to consistently crack the starting LB line-up, the move gives him a chance to showcase his abilities next to another young LB stud – Jon Beason.
The trade will now allow fans across Bear Nation to focus their obsession on upgrading the O-line, particularly the guard position. Unfortunately, the recently released Alan Faneca will not be joining the Bears. He signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals on Tuesday for $2.5 million.
On the heels of drafting Major Wright, the Chris Harris trade is further evidence Jerry Angelo is committed to upgrading the roster to prep for a playoff run. Let’s only hope this Jerry do-over brings better results than the return of Marty Booker to Chicago in 2008.
