4 Bears make Fox Sports’ list of Top 100 players

If your team’s performance is judged by the total number of its players appearing on a list of the league’s 100 best players…Bears fans should probably prep for another year of being awesomely average.

Four Bears made Fox Sports’ list of Top 100 players. The guys and their ranking are as follows:

  • 100 – Jay Cutler
  • 69 – Lance Briggs
  • 66 – Brian Urlacher
  • 23 – Julius Peppers

You figured Briggs, Urlacher and Peppers would make the list. But based on last year, Cutler is a bit of a stretch. The dude who created the rankings (Peter Schrager) admitted the inclusion of Cutler was based more on potential than past performance:

For years, I’ve been killed for being a Jay Cutler “apologist.” After last season, in which I predicted he would lead the Bears to the NFC Championship only to see him toss an NFL-high 26 INTs, I ate quite a bit of crow. But I’m still a sucker for that cannon arm, and with Mike Martz and Chester Taylor in town there’s a lot to like about Cutler in 2010. The Bears WRs may not be household names, but there’s big expectations in the Martz offense. Despite the picks, Cutler still threw for 3,500+ yards and 27 TDs in ’09. I’ll roll the dice: Forget the haters, Jay Cutler’s one of the top 100 NFL players.

The rest of the NFC North was represented as follows:

  • Vikings– 7 total players (tops in the league), led by Jared Allen at #10. After a fumble-prone season, AP dropped to #15. Favre came in at a number almost equal to his age – #46.
  • Packers – 3 players, led by Aaron Rodgers at #8.
  • Lions – 1 guy, Calvin Johnson (#70).

You can slice, dice and criticize the entire list here.

Hmmm…the Bears need a wide out, and some guy named Terrell Owens is out there. Would the Bears even consider Owens, who is out there looking for a team to play for after being dumped by the Bills? Sporting News has 10 landing spots for T.O., and the Bears are on the list:

The Bears are the team most likely to overlook Owens’ past because, well, they’re desperate to win now in order to save coach Lovie Smith’s future. And the Bears simply don’t have a strong No. 1 wideout to pair with franchise quarterback Jay Cutler.

But T.O. has no experience with offensive coordinator Mike Martz, and it’s unlikely that those two strong personalities could coexist, unless every pass is being thrown in Owens’ direction.

Yes T.O is getting older but if anyone noticed he was on a team who did not have it together last year and still did well without causing problems. He is a Talented receiver. I am a ALL THE WAY BEARS FAN! I’ll have it tattooed on my body for life, The Chicago c with DA above it and BEARS below. I have also been watching football as long as I can remember, from small girl watching with daddy to 33 years old now and I NEVER miss a game!Did anyone notice that T.O was part of a team who did not have it all together lastyear? Yet he still made some awesome plays. Can’t do it alone. Also did anyone notice HE CAUSED ZERO downfalls of team he was on. As I said I am 100% DA BEARS all the way for life and My husband and I believe that if the BEARS would give him a chnace they would not regret it! Cutler IS a great quarterback, but all anyone sees was the INT’s. Well a Great quarterback needs protection and time to throw the ball. Brears have made improvements. Lets do this Chicago, You might see that the worries you had on signing him were nothing. Lets go DA BEARS BACK TO THE Super Bowl. I have much faith. I made a bet that when you lost SB you would go again and WIN within 6 years!!! Good Luck T.O!!!!
