Bears backup QB plan leads to Gutierrez

On Wednesday, Brett Favre officially rejoined the Vikings.

And in other quarterback news around the NFC North…

The Bears inked 4-year pro, and former Patriot and Chief, Matt Gutierrez to throw balls to backup receivers for the next…let’s say, month or so…while Caleb Hanie rests his injured shoulder.

So why did Angelo ‘settle’ for Gutierrez, a guy who’s thrown and completed a total of 2 passes in his career? Well, consider Trent Green (retired and in TV), Todd Collins (free agent) and Josh McCown (UFL contract) either had other obligations or just flat-out refused to serve as a rent-a-QB for a month.

It’s looking more and more like the Bears will only keep two QBs on the roster, just like they did most of the year last year. With Hanie firmly entrenched as Cutler’s backup, the aforementioned veterans probably saw the writing on the wall.

And holding a place for rookie QB Dan LeFevour would be a waste of a roster spot in a win-or-get-canned year for Lovie and crew.
