Cutler Has Sprained Knee

The biggest question from the NFC Title Game has been answered. Jay Cutler does have a knee injury, a sprained medial collateral ligament.

The team made the announcement Monday, a day after the team lost to their rivals the Packers in the NFC Title game 21-14.

Cutler jerseys were burned throughout Chicago Sunday night after he left the game, but seemed well enough to walk the sidelines and the QB was not on crutches.

“MCL sprain. That’s what the injury was,” Bears coach Lovie Smith said. “We knew that. We had an idea at the time that that’s what it was, and that’s what we’re saying now.”

Cutler left after one series in the third quarter. He had a terrible first half in which the Bears trailed 14-0.

The biggest debate of the night and now next day seems to be how really hurt and whether he should have played anyway. Todd Collins was terrible in two series, and Caleb Hanie just couldn’t get the job done despite a near heroic effort.

“If things had gone our way and we had made it to the Super Bowl, it would have been questionable if he could have gone in,” Smith said.

In the aftermath of the Bears’ loss, even Chicago legend Mike Ditka had wondered about the severity of Cutler’s injury, while teammate Brian Urlacher vehemently defended the QB.
