Brad Biggs reports that the Bears are going to work out Cal running back Shane Vereen, who could end up as a solid backup to Matt Forte and Chester Taylor.
The Chicago Bears got one of the best seasons they’ve had from a running back in two decades last season from Matt Forte, and veteran backup Chester Taylor was credited with helping raise the level of play.
But that’s not stopping the team from checking out one of the better prospects for the draft, Cal’s Shane Vereen. The Bears are putting Vereen through a private workout today. Vereen, who left school with one year of eligibility remaining, ran well at the Scouting Combine with a 4.49-second, 40-yard dash. He also put up 31 reps on the bench press at 225 pounds.
Whether the Bears would invest a second- or third-round pick in Vereen remains to be seen. That’s where he is projected to go, and the Bears have need on both lines and at cornerback. But they’re doing their homework here and clearly it’s because they like Vereen as a prospect.
