Bears sign C Chris Spencer; Moving on without Kreutz

Chris Spencer, Bears replacement center

Lovie Smith has reported long-time center Olin Kreutz will not be returning this year. The two parties were not able to agree on contract terms. As a result, the Bears have picked up veteran center Chris Spencer.

According to Brad Briggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears have signed Spencer to a two-year deal. The terms were not yet available.  Spencer played for the Seahawks for the past five seasons and will likely start at center for the Bears this year. Coach Lovie Smith on the acquisition:

“Spencer is a good football player. I can’t compare him with Olin. Olin is not an option for us right now.”

He may not compare to Kreutz, but Spencer can definitely fill the empty slot and pan out to be a big help for the Bears front line.
