Martz Desires Veteran OL; Forte Nearing New Deal?

Martz Maximizes Forte

“I think we would all like to have a couple more veteran linemen.”

I guess Mike Martz is reading Bears Gab.

You can never have “enough offensive linemen, quality veteran offensive linemen”, according to Martz.

The Bears offensive coordinator also said he has a “better feel for the line now than he did a year ago at this time.”

According to multiple NFL sources, the Bears have been in touch with a few linemen looking at the opportunity of improving the current group.  An addition could come by the end of the week.

Some free agent offensive linemen available include: guard Brian Waters (Chiefs), guard Leonard Davis (Cowboys), tackle Jared Gaither (Ravens), tackle Max Starks (Steelers).  Also, former Vikings’ tackle Bryant McKinnie just got released.  All four of the aforementioned “hosses” are over-sized linemen, which the team prefers – average starting line weights just less than 320 pounds.

Speaking of size, Martz went on to add that he’s “very happy with the size” of the line:

“I’m very happy with the size of these guys and how physical they are,” Martz said. “Lance came back. He’s a little heavier than he’s been.”

“It’s a big offensive line; big and physical,” Martz said. “We’re not a finesse, cute, cut and pull around and do those types of things. We want to come off the ball [and dominate opponents], and we have those types of guys.”

I like the sound of a big, physical offensive line protection our franchise quarterback.

Forte update: For what it’s worth, a source at Bears camp in Bourbonnais talked to Matt, and was told the running back “expects an extension to be done soon.”

Signing Anthony Hargrove: With the Saints signing defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin from the 49ers, they no longer have a need to keep Hargrove.  Expect the Bears to sign the versatile lineman soon.

The Bears have to get another quality lineman prefearably Brian Waters. They will probably get McKinney be/c Mike Tice was his coach in Minnesota both line and Head Coach.

I really wanted Ryan Harris, who we sought at the trade deadline, but he just signed with Philly. How about the mammoth Leonard Davis? Now, we’re talking – BIG.

Hargrove has signed with the Eagles.

Now, let’s turn our attention to Tatupu or McIntosh at LB, then pick up a pair of OL (guard-tackle tandem) for Mike Tice to work with, and finish things off with Braylon or Malcom Floyd. Good back-up plans for Jay Cutler just in case Roy Williams doesn’t flourish. We haven’t had a legit receiver with size, or just a legit receiver for that matter, since Marcus Robinson was hauling in deep bombs from Jim Miller a decade ago. Mike Martz would turn Floyd into a solid #2 option in the Windy City.

All this, assuming Forte receives what he’s due. Overall, we deserve a B-plus grade this free agency if we finish strong.
