Free Agent Signees set to Practice

Today commences the start of the official NFL season, thus allowing all free agent pick ups to begin practicing with the team. It will be the first chance to see the new additions on the field with their teammates.

Matt Spaeth is the big, blocking tight end Mike Martz favors

Players like Roy Williams (WR) and Matt Spaeth (TE) will finally be able to connect with their quarterback Jay Cutler. Establishing a proper presence and feel between receivers and quarterbacks is key. Sam Hurd, who was also acquired from Dallas will take the field as well to run some routes.

Marion Barber is a threat to challenge league veteran Chester Taylor for the back up spot to Matt Forte. Taylor was well overpaid last year and did not have the stats to back it up. He spelled Forte quickly and average a measly 2.4 yards per carry. Barber’s “barbarian”style of running will be valuable on third downs and goal line situations, both of which the Bears were weak at last year.

Amobi Okoye, picked up from the Texans, excites Lovie Smith at the defensive line. “He has a lot of ability and quickness.” “It didn’t work out for him down in Houston… But we’re excited about getting the chance to work with him.”
