Forte Considers Sitting Out Preseason Games

Bears running back Matt Forte made it known before the lockout ended that he wanted a new contract.

“Any time a player has been producing very well, they’re going to come back and say, ‘Hey, throw me a bone here'”, Forte said last month.

Going about it “the right way” was always part of his plan, and Forte reported to the team’s training camp on time. With the Bears’ preseason opener against the Bills just a week away, Forte tells the Chicago Tribune that he is considering sitting out the preseason games to avoid injury.

“I’ve considered not playing in the preseason games. But just to make that a fact, and say ‘I’m not going to,’ I haven’t gotten there yet,” Forte said on Saturday.

The 2008 second-round pick out of Tulane has started all 16 games in each of the past three seasons, totaling 3,236 yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground with 171 receptions for 1,495 yards and seven touchdowns out of the backfield.

Forte is scheduled to earn $600,000 in base salary in 2011, the revised league minimum for a player with three accrued seasons.
