Soldier Field Sod Safe and Playable for Saturday’s Game

The Field of Seams that caused the cancellation of the Bears’ Aug. 5 Family Fest practice at Soldier Field appeared transformed into a safe and playable surface for Saturday night’s Bears-Bills exhibition opener.

Rain fell steadily before Saturday’s contest, but at about 5:35 p.m., Chicago Park District crews began removing the tarp from the field. The removal actually resembled a ceremonial unveiling, as curious bystanders and media members anticipated seeing the condition of the field.

Giant rollers reportedly were used to level out the field and eliminate the seams earlier in the week.

“The field looks good and it is just exciting to get the season going again,” Bears President Ted Phillips told Fox Sports before the game. Phillips added that if the organization were to decide to change to FieldTurf, it could not then return to natural grass.

“I think the players still would prefer to play on grass,” he said.
