Big plays burn Bears defense in 24-13 loss to Lions

In a sloppy game that featured a total of 26 penalties, the Lions prevailed thanks in part to a pair of big plays.

Calvin Johnson caught his ninth touchdown of the season, a 73-yard bomb from Matthew Stafford to start the scoring in the second quarter, putting the Lions ahead 7-0.

Despite being decimated by an abundance of false starts, the Bears still managed to head into recess with a 10-7 edge after Kellen Davis’ nine-yard score from Jay Cutler; capping off a nine-play, 98-yard drive.

It was an advantage the Bears would not hold onto very long.  To begin the second half, the Lions forced a three and out, and then proceeded to take the ball 55 yards on seven plays; finishing with a Stafford to Brandon Pettigrew 18-yard hookup in the end zone for a 14-10 Lions lead.

Following a halted drive at the Lions 44, the Bears punted the ball to the Lions 12 – and then the game was taken over by Jahvid Best.

Best, who was bottled up leading to his big play, took a shotgun handoff 88 yards to paydirt.  It was a play that told the story of the Bears’ night – just a step too slow for the speedy Lions.

On the play, Lance Briggs was out of place, biting on a Stafford fake, all while Chris Harris (burned on Johnson TD) and Brian Urlacher were nowhere to be found as the second and third lines of defense.

Although Chicago had the ball about two times as long as Detroit, it did not matter at Ford Field on Monday night, as the Lions showed why they are the class next to the Packers, while the Bears season takes a hard fall.

Next: 1-4 Vikings at 2-3 Bears, Sunday October 16, 8:20 ET.

The amount of penalties made this game almost unwatchable. That many false starts is inexcusable. I feel sorry for Cutler, dude got hit on every play and still managed a decent game. Forte looked great first half and then we got away from the run again. Why? Frank Omiyale is the dumpiest player in the league. How does he keep sneaking into the lineup? He is dog shit. At this point I put that on Tice for putting him out there. He got beat every single play. Not that the rest of the line played great but he in particular is always horrible. Forget about Suh and Fairley. The DE’s killed us all game mainly whoever lined up on Omiyale.

How did Best run for over 150? Thats on our D-line and LB’s. Urlacher and Briggs did not look good. O and who is our other LB cuz I haven’t seen him make a play all year? TD and another run to put them in FG range near the end. That little bastard shouldn’t have cracked the 100yrd range let alone 150+. Meriweather can’t tackle, and can’t cover anyone. I see now why Pats dumped him. Chris harris didn’t look like he was eady to come back.

Peanut Tillman,DJ Moore had good defensive games. I think Moore has proved he should be out there more consistanly. Meriweather and Omiyale had better not be playing next week. Those two consistanly bad. Cutler when upright had a nice game. Why did Forte not get his carries in second half?

I know who are other LB is, but he blows. Frank Omiyale is horrible and Meriweather cant tackle or cover so he is useless. Those two need to go a.s.a.p. Chris harris didn’t look ready yet post injury. Urlacher, Peppers and Briggs need to step up every week, they being paid big too. Peppers, Melton and Izzy were supposed to be studs this year. Not so much so far. J. Webb I like you bro but you were getting toyed with for false starts by the vet. Interior line played ok pressure was from outside. Didn’t think i would be congradulating Chris williams but he has been ideal so far this year. Lance louis needs Carimi back and then that right side will be ok. Catch some tape and watch Lance throwing Omiyale out of the way multiple times.

Run the ball. It is what we are good at and opens everything else up. Minus the 7ish false starts our offense was ok first half. Forte finished 112 yrds mostly all first half. We dominated time of possession, Lions gave up lots of penalties too, we didn’t run second half which led to 3rd and longs and 3 and outs. Lions did run tho and two running plays won them the game. 88 yrd td which is inexcusable cuz D-line, LB’s and Safeties all missed and then 30+ yrd run to set up field goal set up to seal the deal. Please learn your lesson Martz! Our best player is Forte hands down. Running keeps clock moving, opens other plays up, maintain possession longer, and wears down defenses, frustrates them, confuses them, keeps Cutler upright, helps line gel and so on and so on.

Martz needs Lovie foot in his ass, Frank Omiyale should never see field again as he has never looked good and continues to fail. Let one of the kids play safety next to a healthy Harris instead of out of control Meriweather. Conte or Major both already better than alwasy out of position Meriweather. Both better tacklers than this head down out of control idiot. 3 simple changes that would make huge impact. Time to earn pay check Lovie cuz seats getting hot. Too many studs on D to have this type performance weeks in a row. Side note: Moore earned some playing time and a look at Corner instead just being in on nickle.

Jerry Angelo you should have improved WR, O-line, and LB spots like the fans were asking.

Let’s try a 5-2 defense; take out Roach at LB and replace him in the lineup with an extra defensive lineman – Okoye.

Or how about this? Meriweather in a joker role? Blitzing from the slot, switching in and out with D.J. Moore. Having Meriweather roam the field and play a hybrid strong safety/strongside ‘backer position. Let him attack. Right now, he has no awareness in coverage and the only thing going for him is his overaggression and willingness to hit.

I can’t talk about Frank. Brutal.

Chris Harris should not have played. Is Major Wright really that bad? The Packers hurt us when they traded up to take Morgan Burnett. Imagine if we had the former Yellow Jacket instead of the Gator.

Webb is a seventh-round pick – and he plays like it. I don’t expect much from him.

Our front four has to be the motor of our D. If not, we are done for.

Not only do we need Carimi back, but wouldn’t it be nice to see Jay’s favorite target, Earl Bennett, back? Oh, yes.

I agree, more touches for Forte. Also, NO MORE BUBBLE SCREENS TO HESTER! The play doesn’t work!

We need more motion and plays to get the ball out of Cutler’s hands quick to receivers on the move, to rack up the yards after catch. You saw the effectiveness of the quick toss to Davis and how it worked. Only way to counter/neutralize the blitz/pressure.

I want to see Corey Graham and Chris Conte. You can’t tell me Meriweather is a better option or a hurt Harris than Graham or Conte. Still high on Conte and I’ve always liked Graham.

  4. bob says:

Omg the Bubble screen! Very creative Martz no one saw that coming.

Ok, I could see Meriweather blitzing because he does come hard but thats honestly about it. He is completely lost out there and he tackles poorly. Your right his only appeal is going for the blow up hit, which he frequently misses and doesn’t wrap up. He connected hard on Steve Smith and Smith rejected him and picked up a couple more yrds. So far the only thing to come from his big hits? is an NFL fine.

Omiyale should be cut and made an example of. He is piss poor. Your right there is nothing to say. Vandenbosh was toying with Webb for false starts. Webb can be OK tho.

Bennett and Carimi will help lots but I hate complaining about injuries. Every team has them and needs to overcome.

Running does so many things for us and we dont do it enough, tired of talking about it. Bottom line run more and stick with it. Forte Barber nice duo utilize them.

Quick short passes seem to be our next best option after running. All of our recievers have run after the catch capabilities. Big play possibilities especially Hester/Knox/Forte then Davis/Bennett/Sanzenbacher good possession guys. Notice I didn’t include Roy who has done nothing. Nice pick up! If we run and short pass, the long ball opens up too. Hester missed a long over the top grab vs Lions. That can’t happen. Can’t blow our limited opportunities.

What is the deal with the D-line? Getting run on for over 100 yds multiple weeks and low on the sack count. Get it together! Doubt we will switch to the 5-2 but Roach is non-existant out there. Regret not signing LB this offseason. Tulloch name was called quite a bit in that game just wrong team. Barret Ruud or Paul Pusluz also were availible and Lofa Tatupa, among others. We missed a chance to improve drastically, Roach is a back up at best.

Graham and Peanut corners, Conte and healthy Harris safety, with a nice mix of DJ whenever we can get him in sounds pretty good, Jennings ok but should not be a starter, Meriweather and Major are mildly retarted.

Super frustrating but can turn around. We need to stop the run next couple weeks vs. Vikings and Bucs as they are basically one dimensional teams with elite RB’s. If we can’t get sacks against Vick and the Eagles we can’t get anyone. Win these three winnable games and we got second chance at Lions at home.

  5. Russ Loede says:

We missed a chance with Jacquian Williams in Round six when we took J.T. Thomas over the South Florida product. I even heard we were interested in Williams, too.

Our drafting leaves much to be desired.

The Packers know this all too well.

Lastly, would like to see Wootton (full participation in practice Wednesday) see some time and make an impact. I have high hopes for the former Wildcat standout.

  6. bob says:

Wooten and Peppers make nice book ends. Both tall and hard to throw over if they get hands up. Glad Wooton finally getting to the field he looked good preseason. Would like to see us cycle line a little more. Okoye and Wooten, maybe Peae Reed depending on matchup can give some breaks and keep everyone fresh. Stay fresh and bring it every down.

Agreed on the drafting. Carimi good pick. Peae hopefully works out by next year. Enderle and JT I don’t understand, bad picks. Williams would have been better choice for sure. Why did we pick a developmental QB? We had much greater needs. Conte has potential but seemed like a high pick. Still think we should have grabd a proven LB and have a trifecta of pro-bowl caliber linebackers.

  7. Russ Loede says:

According to a source, Omiyale is not getting another shot to start…
