Bears rookie safety Conte to see field soon?

“We have to improve at safety, getting in position to make some of those plays,” he said. “We can’t continue to give up big plays. My emphasis, has been on that as much as anything.”

Bears coach Lovie Smith dropping the cold hard truth about the team’s disappointing play at the safety position.

Which begs the question: when will third-round pick Chris Conte (California) get some playing time?

“We start from scratch each week,” Smith said. “You see what happened that last game and what you think you need to do coming up. Chris Conte … hasn’t really gotten an opportunity, so who knows?”

Who knows, maybe undrafted (Delaware) rookie free agent Anthony Walters, who was recently elevated from the practice squad to replace Winston Venable, will get some action along with the former Golden Bear in the club’s shaky secondary.

Needless to say, anything’s better than seeing an injured Chris Harris or Brandon “Crash” Meriweather at safety.

Harris good when healthy. Conte deserves a shot, cuz Meriweather is a defensive liability, tackling and coverage. Major had his shot and did not look good either, similar to Meriweather, he was lost out there and missed tackles. How about getting his ankles broke by a 260+ lbs Brandon Jacobs in the preseason. (lol) Meriweather big tackle ability is over-rated, watch him bounce off of Steve Smith. Conte can tackle, so I would put him in just on that note. I think Conte has got to be up there as team leader in special team tackles.

It would be nice to see Conte, Paea and Wooten hit the field this week. Add some Corey Graham and DJ Moore and give this “D” some life. Gotta work the kids into the game.
