A Big List of Potential Quarterbacks

The Bears announced today that they will sign a quarterback to the roster.

If Caleb Hanie implodes or gets injured in Oakland or at home against Kansas City, Nathan Enderle might know the offense enough to go in but having a veteran who’s thrown against many NFL defensive coverages and taken many NFL hits could be important to a postseason run.

Here is a list of the most distinguished quarterbacks the Bears could sign, in order of likelihood.

1. J.T. O’Sullivan. Played for: Packers, Lions, 49ers, Bengals. Career starts: 8 (2-6). Career passer rating: 69.9. I always liked his mobility and Martz likes his intelligence, (mostly) holding the clipboard for Martz with both the Lions and the 49ers. He was also on the Bears roster in the past.

2. Jeff Garcia. Played for: 49ers, Browns, Lions, Eagles (twice), Buccaneers. Career starts: 116 (58-58; 2-4 postseason). Career passer rating: 87.5, also has 26 rushing TDs. He has filled in on an Eagles playoff run before and worked out for the Texans today. In other words, if the Bears are interested, they should act now.

3. Trent Edwards. Played for: Bills, Jaguars. Career starts: 33 (14-19). Career passer rating: 75.4, also has 3 rushing TDs. Edwards turned down a back-up role on the Dolphins in early October but maybe this is the right situation or he’s regained his fervor. He also worked out for the Texans today.

4. Dan Lefevour. Played for: Bengals. Career starts: 0. Career passer rating: none. Drafted by the Bears, he’s on the Colts Practice Squad and they may want to bring him up if the Bears claim him, because they could end up becoming desperate – they are 0-10 right now – to win a game.

5. Kellen Clemens. Played for: Jets. Career starts: 9 (4-5). Career passer rating: 59.7, also has 2 rushing TDs.  He’s a great leader and hard worker. He also worked out for the Texans today.

6. Jake Delhomme. Played for: Saints, Panthers, Browns. Career starts: 96 (56-40; 5-3 postseason). Career passer rating: 81.2, also has 7 rushing TDs. After Tommy John surgery, Jake Delhomme was throwing into coverage too often. However, he has a lot of postseason experience and many of these games will have such implications. He’s also been good in the past for teams with strong running games and defenses, doing enough to keep defenses honest.

7. Brett Favre. Played for: Packers, Jets, Vikings. Career starts: 298 (186-112; 13-11 postseason). Career passer rating: 86.0, also has 14 rushing TDs. Favre and Cutler share the same agent, Bus Cook. Favre can be a bad teammate and his skills looked diminished in his final season last year. He also admitted that his heart wasn’t totally in it and that he just came back for a few of his teammates. If the Bears are serious about winning this season, they should at least get in touch with Cook this weekend and definitely call him back if Sunday goes south.

Jason LaCanfora, who has many connections in Baltimore where he last played, is sure Marc Bulger is staying retired. Otherwise, he’d be #1 on this list.

  1. Jimbo says:

Denver Broncos waived Kyle Orton. He would be perfect to comeback to the bears Lets go Lovie

  2. Bob says:

I think he is best option. Game manager. Knows Chicago. Has some connections with teammates. Intelligent guy, Martz would like him. Still would prob be back up to Hanie tho unless Hanie fails badly. I think Orton prob would want the Texans job to start right away and have foster, johnson weapons. I think Houston more appealing if u are a Qb looking for a team right now. If he performs well he could even steal Shaubs spot next year or at least compete for it. I expect Hanie to do well.
