Bears coach Lovie Smith was put off by multiple reports that offensive coordinator Mike Martz, in the final year of his contract, will not return in 2012 according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.
“If there’s a change that will be made, I’ll be making it, and I definitely haven’t discussed that with anyone,” Smith said. “So, I’m sure there are a lot of things out there that people make up. That has to be made up because nothing like that came from me. It should definitely stop right there.”
The Martz reports came on the heels of speculation last week that the 60-year-old would be a candidate for head-coaching vacancies at Arizona State and UCLA.
Martz was out of football during the 2009 season before Smith hired his longtime friend in January 2010. One scenario is someone in his camp is working behind the scenes in an effort to create contract leverage and market interest for him.
