Smith Says He’s Not Shocked at the Firing of Jerry Angelo

Bears coach Lovie Smith met with the media at the NFL Combine Thursday for the first time after the Bears fired general manager Jerry Angelo.

“As far as surprised, I mean, we know in our profession what’s at stake always and changes can happen at any time,” Smith said according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. “I’m here primarily because of what Jerry Angelo did for me, giving me an opportunity, leading the charge to give me the opportunity to be the head football coach here. I can’t necessarily say surprised at the end of the year, it’s not a surprise, I don’t think any coach or GM in the league is surprised about anything that happens, but again Jerry did an awful lot for us, but you move on and that’s what we’ve done.

“Jerry will be fine, he’s a lifetime friend but you do move on and as far as my involvement with the search, I was involved, of course I had a chance to meet with all the guys coming through and talk to them. I wanted them to see, as much as anything, have an idea of what I’m about, what I was trying to get accomplished as a head coach.”

I hope Emery works out. Angelo had ups and downs. U could argue that He made some decent moves and Players underperformed. Tommie Harris looked to be a long time stud pro bowl csliber but injuries caught up with him. Cedric benson is still legit for bengals but didn’t follow bears off field ideals. Alex brown was good but cut at the right time. Forte is former 44 pick and legit. Daniel manning was pro bowlish but eventually let go. Carimi was an Angelo pick and he appear to be at least Rt of the future. Mike brown was stud but got hurt. Hester was an obvious steal. Olsen was good till traded but still got value with his trade. Kellwn Davis is capable, and might thrive in
New offense. Chris williams failed at tackle but seems to be capable guard. Webb was a pick u couldn’t blaim Amy Gm for, 3rd rnd 6’6 330 OT with some skills? Yep for any team. Conte, wright, Melton, peae, He obviously made some misses but all teams around the league did. As much as I love Kruetz but we prob made the right decision there too. He obviously had some failures but lets give him a
Little credit. Bears might have had much better success minus these two dumpy O- coordinators. Turner was just bad (short pass on 3rd and long all the time bad) and Martz was crazy obviously living in the past and not clicking with coaches or players.
Our defense has never been horrible. Angelo has been kinda known gorbhis defensive picks. Always decent at least. Remember Angelo also made the big move for Peppers. He also made the move for Cutler. He just forgot to give him some weapons.
In my opinion Emery has a great opportunity. A healthy carimi, cutler, forte already changes offense drastically. A healthy amount of FA cash could bring in a nice Wr or DE. Maybe both. Plus the advantage of a draft with 4 picks in the top 3 rnds. 1st two picks should be immediate impacts. 3rd rnds should be depth and special teams. Then the typical hopefuldepth and chance studs with late picks.
Bears will be ok. Emery will Build on our core. Wish him the best.
Angelo deserves some applaud along with his criticism. I mean we could have the jaguars or browns etc GM’s.
