Rookie in the Big Show

Shea McClellin was the Bears first round draft pick for the 2012 season. I was in a van driving to New Orleans when the draft was taking place and several of the bros in my car were anxiously awaiting the Bears’ pick. Constantly refreshing our phones, my iPhone was the first one to showcase the no name that came up on the board. I said “Shea McClellin” and you could easily hear the confusion and disgust I had in my voice. Who the hell was this guy? Everyone in the van immediately started Googling his name to see what they could find on him. Suffice it to say, no one in that particular van thought much of Phil Emery’s second stamp on the team (Marshall being his first) and it took us all back to the reign of Angelo the Unholy.

Fast forward to last Thursday night’s game against the Broncos and we see now that Shea had an alright game being credited for a sack, a few hurries and a tackle for loss. However, what his stat line fails to mention was the fact that he got dominated on run plays. Look, Shea is a situational pass rusher. Not an every-down lineman. He is too small to stop the run but has great speed and the athletic ability to reach the QB on those 3rd down passing plays. For the coaching staff to bump him up to the first team stinks of desperation in them trying to prove that they made the right call. It seems like the Bears are always hoping to make the Cinderella stories happen (Chris Williams, David Terrell) and it pisses me off to no end. But what do you expect? The Bears absolutely blow donkeys at drafting. While I think Shea will bring something to this team, I do not think he was worth a first round pick and I don’t think you will see Shea-Mania take hold of Chicago anytime soon.

However, say next off season Shea goes all Lattimer on everyone’s asses, puts on 30 pounds of muscle and starts smokin’ car windows in the parking lot….well then…think we got ourselves a player. PLACE AT THE TABLE!
