Urlacher and McManis Take Home Honors as NFC Players of the Week

Rookie running back DOUG MARTIN of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and linebacker BRIAN URLACHER and cornerback SHERRICK MC MANIS of the Chicago Bears are the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the ninth week of the 2012 season (November 1, 4-5), the NFL announced today.

DEFENSE: LB BRIAN URLACHER, CHICAGO BEARS

  • ·         Urlacher had a 46-yard interception-return touchdown, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and recorded seven tackles in the Bears’ 51-20 win at Tennessee.
  • ·         The interception was the 22nd of his career, tying him with Pro Football Hall of Famer DICK BUTKUS for the second-most by a linebacker in franchise history.
  • ·         Urlacher has five career touchdowns and his four defensive TDs are tied for the fourth-most in club history.
  • ·         The Bears are the first team in NFL history with seven INT-TDs through the first eight games of a season.
  • ·         The Bears’ seven defensive touchdowns are already tied for the team single-season record set in 1942.
  • ·         This is the second time in his career Urlacher had an interception, forced fumble and fumble recovery in a game.
  • ·         Five of his seven tackles occurred within three yards of the line of scrimmage.
  • In his 13th year from New Mexico, this is Urlacher’s seventh career Player of the Week Award (six on defense and one on special teams). He was last honored in Week 1, 2011.
  • His six Defensive Player of the Week Awards are tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer RICHARD DENT for the most in team history.

SPECIAL TEAMS: CB SHERRICK MC MANIS, CHICAGO BEARS

  • McManis blocked a punt that was returned by COREY WOOTTON for a touchdown in the Bears’ win at Tennessee. McManis also recorded two special teams tackles.
  • With 6:52 remaining in the first quarter and the score tied at zero, McManis blocked the Tennessee punt at the Titans’ five-yard line. Wootton returned it five yards for a touchdown that put the Bears ahead for good.
  • It marked the first blocked-punt return touchdown by the Bears since October 19, 2008 when GARRETT WOLFE returned a punt blocked by CRAIG STELTZ 17 yards for a score.
  • In Chicago’s 28-point first quarter, the team scored a touchdown on a blocked punt, a run, an interception and a pass. The Bears are the first team in NFL history to score a TD on each of those in a quarter.
  • ·         In his third season from Northwestern, this is McManis’ first career Player of the Week Award.
  • ·         He is first Bears non-return specialist to win this award since ZACKARY BOWMAN (Week 7, 2008).
