Bears coach John Fox won’t put a timetable on the right knee injury that currently has starting running back Matt Forte sidelined, Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune reports.
And the Bears won’t rule Forte out of Monday night’s game with the San Diego Chargers until Saturday afternoon at the earliest. But with Forte missing his second consecutive practice Friday at Halas Hall, it’s become clear that rookie Jeremy Langford will make his first start at running back.
Also clear: the Bears feel confident Langford can fill in adequately. Quarterback Jay Cutler praised Langford’s preparation habits Friday and acknowledged the strides he has made in learning protections as well as his responsibilities in the passing game.
“If you tell him something, he already knows it,” Cutler said. “He knows what he’s supposed to do. And he’s developing quickly.”
Langford expressed his readiness for the opportunity after Friday’s practice.
“I feel comfortable,” he said. “Since coming in, I’ve been doing a great job of preparing like I was the starter and still have the mindset of if anything happens, I can go in there and not lose any slack or make them call different plays because I’m in there.”
