Will Dane Make The Final 53?
One of the biggest surprises (not to me) at training camp so far: undrafted free agent wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher is challenging Earl Bennett for first team reps at slot receiver.
However, Bears receivers coach Darryl Drake knows the Ohio State product still has to prove himself in preseason:
“Seeing is believing,” Drake said. “You can’t minimize the fact he’s done some good things. I’m not. You know, this game is based on production. The opportunities are based on production. Now, he’s got to go out there in the preseason and prove it against other people, but he’s going against some pretty good guys now.
It’s been a learning experience for Sanzenbacher, a player who fits the mold of a prototypical Mike Martz receiver:
“It’s a good position to be in, regardless, when you’re a rookie,” Sanzenbacher said. “You can’t ask for anything more than to get a chance, and to get reps out there. It’s a lot to try and sort out, digest at first. You’re thinking about not only getting the play right and position right on the right with your splits, but then you got to read the defense and everything. It’s been a learning experience, but it’s been really cool to learn on the fly.”
Personally, I would like to see the former Buckeye or Kris Adams (UTEP) make the final cut. Hopefully, if one (or both) of the UDFA wideouts don’t make it, the team would be able to retain either Sanzenbacher or Adams on their practice squad.
Am I out of line to think Dane Sanzenbacher could not only make the team, but also have an impact as a rookie? Don’t bet on it happening, although, don’t count it out either.
